ZIAM Lab tour

Have you ever wondered what your professors and some TAs are working on beyond the courses they teach? This is your chance to get a look at how research is carried out in the very building where you attend lectures. Possibly, you may even end up working in one of these labs as part of a thesis someday.

You can sign up via this link until Wednesday, May 6 at 12:00. Please note that there are only 40 spots available. If the event is fully booked, you can contact the association to be added to the waiting list.

Here is a brief description of each research group whose labs are included in the tour:

1. Quantum Devices – Prof. Caspar van der Wal
We study defects in silicon carbide that can emit light and store quantum information. By cooling them to near absolute zero and using lasers and fields, we control their quantum states—key for future technologies like the quantum internet.

2. Bio-Inspired Circuits – Prof. Elisabetta Chicca
We design energy-efficient, brain-inspired computer chips that mimic neural networks, helping us explore how learning and computation work in biological systems.

3. Solid-State NMR – Prof. Patrick van der Wel
We use advanced NMR techniques to study materials and biomolecules at the atomic level, including protein aggregation in diseases and the structure of nanomaterials.

4. Experimental Atomic Physics – Prof. Ronnie Hoekstra
We investigate how atoms and ions interact in high-energy environments, with applications ranging from space physics to fusion and advanced chip manufacturing.
